EmergingTech update

O'Reilly EmergingTech 2005 : wating for the opening talk

Here are the three things that I will remember an ponder on in the future from yesterdays's events at ETech :

  1. Yahoo Research Labs' work on new p2p financial microstructures (dynamic pari-mutuel market implemented in the Tech Buzz Game) that might just do it for cognitive authority status determination.
  2. Microsoft Research's Sensecam and MyLifeBits. Self explanatory.
  3. I briefly listened to Rohit Khare on web content notifications and I came to realize that there is a a real desire to see HTTP depart from the strict synchroneous, stateless, client-server model to a more, well, asynchroneous, stateful and P2P model. Now, I don't know if that's cool and desirable (what makes HTTP appealing is that it's a relatively cheap protocol allowing you to build relatively rich applications), but that's certainly is desired by many. While, I think, ReST's spirit is maintained by this upcoming generation of HTTP, I also think there will be a fierce debate on what new verbs (currently GET, PUT, DELETE, POST, etc.) are going to get standardized an if the current verbs will keep the same semantics. Maybe having verb namespaces is the solution?

  6. Independent Individuals and Wise Crowds, or Is It Possible to Be Too Connected?
  7. Mobile Computing On the Edge
  8. Ontology is Overrated: Links, Tags, and Post-hoc Metadata
  9. Remixing Culture with RDF: Running a Semantic Web Search in the Wild
  10. Forgiveness, Not Permission: Retro-fitting the Semantic Web onto British Democracy
  11. Social Robotics, Scmocial Robotics: Feral Robotics and Some Other Quacking, Shaking, Bubbling (what would the opposite of feral be?) Robots

Oh, and I have a cold, so I probably won't blog as crazily as I thought.
